Warminster Sponsored Row
The club sponsored Warminster school in a "rowathon" to raise funds towards a four week trip to Tanzania. The purpose of the activity will be to contribute to community development work, environmental projects and wildlife conservation. It also includes a challenge element which is scuba diving allowing us to help with local marine conservation in Tanga (a small rural village on the north east coast of Tanzania), where we will help clean up the reef.
The core objectives of the expedition are to undertake projects in order to:
• Raise educational standards of developing communities within a rural district of Tanzania. We will be helping build schools and help teach at schools which have been built by previous parties
• Raise the living standards of developing communities. We will be helping build huts and improve the water supply
• Assist with ongoing wildlife conservation programmes to preserve biodiversity and protect vulnerable habitats. We will be going into the Serengeti game reserve to help improve the watering holes for the savannah wildlife.
The team rowed 368.7 km and so far have raised £1500 - well done Warminster School!

On Sunday 9 March, Frome Lions travelled to Henstridge, the Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance centre to meet the crew and their helicopter. They were shown the aircraft by the crew who answered the member’s questions. Lion President Frank Collins presented a cheque for £1500, raised through the club’s Haybale collection. The air ambulance service was begun in 2000 as a registered as a registered charity, and has attended thousands of emergencies. The aircraft, a EC135 Eurocopter can reach any part of the two counties in 20 minutes. It costs £1.7 million to operate, about £2500 per mission. The pilot and ground crew are funded by the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Annual collections of the Haybale have been made for over 40 years from farmers who donate bales of hay, straw, silage or cash. Donations of materials are then sold at market value. Despite last year’s difficult weather conditions, farmers increased their donations. The club wish to extend it’s thanks to friends in the farming community for their generosity.

Frome Lions Handover £1500 from its Hay Bale
Collection
On 14 February 2012, the Club presented a cheque for £1,500 to the Evergreens Exercise Club in Frome, from money raised on the annual Hay Bale collection.

Through a weekly Tuesday afternoon session of gently exercise to music coordination and strength noticeably improve, along with confidence to regain independence. In addition to the exercises Linda also brings in outside speakers and organises occasional outings. But along with so many groups, Evergreens has weathered a difficult year where its future was threatened, first by cuts to transport and then by the impending closure of its long term venue at Bennett Gardens, Frome. However, with changes to charges, drivers and association, and with the generous donation from the Lions, the Evergreens future appears secure. Lions Club of Frome Donate to World Disasters
Most of you would have been watching the news on TV recently and seen the horrific pictures of the Japanese earth quake and tsunami plus their nuclear power plant problems. The Lions Club International has committed $1.25 million US dollars immediately to Japan, which all the worlds 45,000 Lions Clubs contribute to. There are 1.35 million members world wide in over 200 countries belonging to those clubs and their motto is ‘Making a difference everyday, everywhere’. The Financial Times has ranked Lions Clubs International Foundation the “best among non-government organisations worldwide with which to work”.Lions Club International has also given $110,000 US dollars to assist following the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand to provide a wide range of help. This included the delivery of 500 portable toilets to public places and suburbs, going door to door with the Red Cross to assess people’s needs, providing meals through local Lions Clubs and delivering water in bottles and tankers to the communities so badly effected. Like many Lions, the time they give is as valuable as the money donated. The Lions Club International has also given to the Australian floods appeal in Queensland. To sum up all these disasters, sadly some people have lost their lives, but many have lost their homes and their worldly possessions and are desperate for assistance. Frome Lions have contributed to the Lions International Funds for each of these disasters and many previous ones too, as this is our commitment to world wide health and social problems.
The Gateway Club, Frome

It is the only charity providing free specialist nursing care at home for people with life-threatening illness in Bath, north and west Wiltshire and north east Somerset. Most of our care is provided in people’s own homes, as that is where the majority of our patients prefer to be. Short-term care, out-patient and day patient services are provided at the hospice in Winsley, near Bath. To make sure patients have the best possible quality of life, pain and symptom relief, respite for carers, emotional and spiritual support and day care are all provided free of charge. Patients are looked after from a wide geographical area – Bath, north and west Wiltshire and parts of Somerset. The vast majority of the hospice’s income – 83 per cent – is spent directly on patient care. A further 9 per cent goes on education, which indirectly benefits patients by training Dorothy House staff and other health care professionals.
